This Butter Cabbage recipe is always a side dish winner ! So buttery and loaded with bacon and vegetables – perfect to serve with most meals.
As a kid and even early adulthood, I did not much care for cabbage. Only loved cabbage when served as coleslaw.
This Butter Cabbage with peas and bacon is one side dish which has changed my whole view of cabbage !
Dripping with butter (I spoon over the butter from the cooking pot too!), bacon and onions, only makes this a winning everyday side dish.
Also a must have side dish for special occasions – think Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Let’s take a quick look at the ingredients (all standard !) and then scroll down to the recipe card for the directions:
- 3 slices Bacon
- 1 Head Cabbage, coarsely chopped
- 1/2 cup Onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup Frozen Peas, no need to defrost
- 1/3 cup Unsalted Butter
- 1 t Salt
- 1/4 t Black Pepper, freshly milled
I am sure most of us home cooks already have all the ingredients on hand. However, I do buy my fresh produce once a week, for instance the cabbage.
Another bonus (besides tasting great) is that the Butter Cabbage can be made in no time at all.
To serve for the holidays it adds color as well and we do know colorful, especially side dishes, are kids’ favorite.
You might find that your kids like this cabbage dish even more than the meats you serve with your meal .
Can I make a bigger batch of the Butter Cabbage ?
Yes you can ! I do that often when we have visitors over. Simply use your wok (with a lid) and the recipe can easily be doubled by doubling all your ingredients.
No wok ? Use two large pots or skillets instead !
Whether you make a single batch, double or even triple, the Butter Cabbage is still a very economical, tasty side dish.
